R.I.P. John Nuese (The International Submarine Band)

International Submarine Band guitar player John Nuese has died. R.I.P.

Guitarist and songwriter John Nuese was in a band called "The Trolls" in 1965. (The Trolls featured not only Nuese, but also Lowell "Banana" Levenger, a guitarist and keyboardist who was a founding member of the Youngbloods, and bassist Michael Kane, who followed Levenger into the Youngbloods in 1971).
Later that year, Nuese fell in with Gram Parsons at Harvard, where they formed Gram Parsons and the Like. The Like became the International Submarine Band, and gradually focused on country music, which Nuese had reintroduced to Parsons. Nuese stuck with Parsons in the second version of the ISB, who recorded Safe at Home (LHI, 1968).

The Byrds - My Way (written by Jimmi Seiter)

The Byrds - My Way

Written by Jimmi Seiter

The Byrds - My Way (Volume 1) is a first-hand description of the inner workings of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers: written by James 'Jimmi' Seiter (Road Manager, and much more). It sets the record and previous assumptions straight as to what was really going on, from detailed personal, first-hand experience. He takes you on his journey which began in 1966, telling his version of events as he lived them in the form of 42 stories. It elaborates on the hard work that went on behind the scenes, to make the magic of music happen on stage. The book recounts the daily happenings of a few of America's foremost Rock/Folk/Pop bands of the 1960's & 1970's.

This book is the first in a series of 10 volumes. It begins with the Byrds, continues on to the Flying Burrito Brothers (which was a spin off band from the Byrds) then back to the Byrds. It moves on to working with Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, David Cassidy, and back to The Flying Burrito Bros. The author's path has also crossed with many other great artists such as Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, and John Denver, to name a few.

The e-book is also now available at AMAZON, APPLE-I BOOKS, BAKER & TAYLOR – BLIO, BARNES & NOBLE, COPIA, E BOOK PIE, GARDNERS, KOBO and READER STORE – SONY

Dorothy McGuinn dies at 102

From Roger McGuinn's Folkden Page:

"I turned 70 on July 13, 2012. People were shocked! So was I. That’s why I decided to record this song for the Folk Den on July 14.
Last night, July 31, my brother Brian called to tell us that my mother Dorothy had passed away just three days after her 102nd birthday.
We’d spent the day with her in Tucson where my grandson James and I had played guitars and sung her favorite songs to her."

The CANDY Original Soundtrack has been released on CD on the Reel Time label.

It features a radically different version of The Byrds' "Child Of The Universe", a song from the band's "Dr Byrds & Mr Hyde" LP.

Strangely, the song "Candy" (written especially for the movie by Roger McGuinn and John York) does not appear on the movie soundtrack.

Byrds live recording from December 1967 has just surfaced after 45 years!

An unofficial recording of a Byrds performance at the Winterland, San Francisco, on December 9, 1967 has surfaced yesterday.

The lineup is the trio of Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke.

A true find, and adding to the surprise is a 5:25 long version of "Milestones", an instrumental which has long been the Holy Grail for Byrds completists. It is sandwiched between "My Back Pages" and "Eight Miles High", a place that would soon be filled by "B.J. Blues" in later concerts.

New CD by Horst-Peter Schmidt JINGLE JANGLE POETRY

Horst-Peter Schmidt, the Crown Prince Of The Rickenbacker 12-String Guitar, Germany’s answer to Roger McGuinn, has just released a new CD.

Strongly Recommended by Byrds Flyght to all those who miss the chiming guitar riffs that McGuinn unfortunately abandoned (or nearly).

Here are columnist Eric Sorensen’s liner notes.

JINGLE JANGLE POETRY

Prolific singer/songwriter Horst-Peter Schmidt takes a break from writing the lyrics on his latest full-length release "Jingle Jangle Poetry”. This "theme” album combines the verse of poets and bards with Schmidt’s own compositions and his unmistakable 12-string guitar riffs. The result is a very pleasant listening experience that showcases both Horst-Peter’s Roger McGuinn discipleship and his reverence for inspirational poetry that has stood the test of time. Love, hope, the beauty of nature, the perseverance of the human spirit and optimism are pervasive themes in the poetry that Schmidt has set to music. Horst-Peter continues to channel Roger McGuinn through his Rickenbacker 12-string play and his vocals, and he borrows some of the recording techniques from McGuinn’s self-produced Limited Edition album. Byrds fans will be most delighted with the mid-tempo "Red Red Rose” (Robert Burns), "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening” (Robert Frost) and "Who Knows If The Moon’s (A Balloon)” (e. e. Cummings). Horst-Peter’s Rickenbacker 12-string riffs are more muted on the other tracks, and Schmidt employs the use of synthesizer/programming effects on several songs. While this is a departure from his usual chiming folk-rock material, "Jingle Jangle Poetry” continues to reflect Horst-Peter Schmidt’s growth as an artist. I challenge you to find another contemporary musician who has expanded on the influences of his musical predecessors as distinctively as Horst-Peter has. "Jingle Jangle Poetry” is the latest jewel in the crown of the Crown Prince Of 12-String!

-- Eric Sorensen, "Jangle On!” Columnist

This and other CDs by Horst-Peter Schmidt are available for download from CD Baby at

Interesting New Byrds Compilation Album Released In Japan

Sony Japan has just released yet another compilation of Byrds songs.

This time, it’s a 2-disc set called:

THE BYRDS – ORIGINAL SINGLES – As & B’s – 1965-1971

There are 52 songs (27 on disc 1, 25 on disc 2).

However, we wonder what “It Happens Each Day”, “I Know My Rider” and “Psychodrama City” are doing on this compilation. They were not issued as singles in that time frame. They first appeared much later (in the 80s) on rarities and unreleased tracks compilations albums.

R.I.P. Doug Dillard May 16, 2012

The bluegrass, folk and country rock worlds are in mourning today with the death of banjo player Doug Dillard at the age of 75.

Dillard died Wednesday in Nashville following a lengthy illness.

Along with his brother Rodney, the Dillards would become one of the dominant acts during the acoustic music boom of the 1960s, also gaining prominence and widespread exposure as occasional guest stars on "The Andy Griffith Show" as the mountain family 'The Darlings.'

He also left his mark on the country rock genre as half of Dillard & Clark, which he formed in 1968 with ex-Byrds frontman Gene Clark.

He was a temporary member of the touring Byrds in 1968.

Chris Ethridge, a founding member of The Flying Burrito Brothers, has died.

Chris Ethridge left the FBBs after the group recorded its first album, "The Gilded Palace of Sin”, in 1969.

He eventually returned to work as a studio and touring musician, playing with The Doors, Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder, Randy Newman, Jackson Browne, Arlo Guthrie, and many others.

He also participated in the revival of the Flying Burrito Brothers in 1975, playing bass on one of the two LPs they released in the mid-seventies (Flying Again), and he appears on two live CDs recorded during this era ("From Another Time" and "The Red Album").

He also played on ex-Byrds and ex-Flying Burrito Brothers members' solo albums (Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Dillard & Clark, David Crosby, The International Submarine Band...).

He co-wrote three of Gram Parsons' best songs: "Hot Burrito #1", "Hot Burrito #2" and "She".

The Byrds - Lost Broadcasts DVD available at last

Months and months after being announced, this DVD has finally become available from some outlets.

The Byrds – The Lost Broadcasts

Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Skip Battin, Jimmi Seiter

The Lost Broadcasts are a series of DVD sets featuring performances that have rarely been seen since the original transmission on german television, in some cases more than forty years ago.

The second session comes from October 1972 and they perform three versions of Black Mountain Rag and two versions of So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star.
