Chris Hillman hosting a Christmas Show

Chris Hillman, rock legend Hall-of-Famer and perhaps best known as co-founder of the The Byrds is Celebrity Host for Every Now and Then Theatre and Conejo Players Theatre's world premiere radio presentation of “Wearing Santa's Suit." The show will air on NewsTalk 1590 KVTA December 24th at 3pm and 9pm, then on December 25th at 7am, 12pm and 8pm.

Based on actual happenings, the production allows you to enter the mind of Santa as he encounters all types at a harborside art festival, chamber mixer, private club, radio station listener party, children's shelter, his next-door neighbor, a panicked girlfriend, and one family's personal appearance request.

Hillman, a Ventura County resident, is often cited as one of the early pioneers of the country-rock genre. His past bands include Manassas, The Desert Rose Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Souther-Hillman-Furay. As Every Now and Then Theatre's chosen Celebrity Host, Hillman will open the show and set the scene for the hour long broadcast. At the breaks, he takes us back in time with recorded Christmas comments from Ventura County's children- who are now adults. Hillman will wrap up the broadcast revealing the ensemble cast, nearly all of whom played multiple characters.

“Wearing Santa's Suit” was directed by Shawn W. Lanz of Camarillo. Script and producer was James Wortman of Ventura. Onsite sound engineer was David Tuomi of Thousand Oaks. Post Sound Producer was Bob Allen from KVTA. The broadcast was made possible with resources from Barkerductions in Ventura for equipment, and Goldcoast Broadcasting for air time. CD copies of the broadcast are made available to cast and crew in trade for donations to KVTA's Children's Services Fund.

Now in its 24th year, the all-volunteer Every Now and Then Theatre has won 35 international, national, and local awards for radio drama excellence. They are now part of the American Radio Archives in Thousand Oaks. Chris Hillman's website is www.chrishillman.com.

Gene Clark's NO OTHER to be performed on tour

No Other is the 1974 album by Gene Clark, a founding member of the the Byrds. At the time of its release, it was viewed as a critical and commercial failure, but over time, it's become a cult favorite. Next month, that album will be celebrated on a brief tour where it'll be performed note-for-note by a supergroup featuring Beach House, plus members of Fleet FoxesGrizzly Bearthe Walkmen, and more.
The band will include Beach House's Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. Lead vocal duties will be handled by Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen, the Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser, Iain Matthews of Plainsong/Fairport Convention, and Legrand. The rest of the band features Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, plus members of Lower Dens, Cass McCombs' band, Celebration, and Mt. Royal.
Beach House wrote this statement on the album:
Though we generally love all of his music, we are most infatuated with his 1974 record, No Other. It feels like a special moment in Gene Clark's songwriting. At first, the overdone, studio nature of the album feels overbearing: the electric violin, the female chorus, the bass riffs, the layered guitar sequences. However, with more listens, Gene Clark's very unique lyrics, voice and spirit become the central focus. It's one of those records where each time you listen, you love a different song the most. Every song is nuanced and amazing in its own way.
Before the performances, they'll show an edit of a new documentary on Clark and No Other called The Byrd Who Flew Alone. Check out a trailer for that documentary below. DJ BLT, aka Brad Truax (Soldiers of Fortune, Black Mountain, Spiritualized), will also open with a set of music related to No Other.

No Other Tour:
01-22 Philadelphia, PA - Union Transfer
01-23 Baltimore, MD - Floristree
01-24 Washington, DC - 9:30 Club
01-25 New York, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg

Ultra-rare original Gene Clark CD TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY now available from Byrds-Flyght

We were lucky enough to purchase several still sealed copies of Gene Clark's long deleted (since the late 80s) CD version of his 1977 album TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.

This CD was briefly released on Polydor in the USA in the late 80s, and was never re-released on compact disc.

Some copies were sold on eBay for $150,00 + lately.

So get it while you can from us. Just make an offer to byrdsflyght@skynet.be and you'll get a reply within 24 hours.

This is the real thing, not the long promised re-release by High Moon records for more than one year, that failed to appear.

Good luck.

From Camilla McGuinn...

From Camilla McGuinn...

"July of 2013 was very unusual for us…we stayed home for the whole month. It was time for editing the DVD we’re working on and the 2 CDs from the live show in Tucson in 2012. We plan on releasing these discs as a package:
"Roger McGuinn - Stories, Songs and Friends - 2 CDs and a Bonus DVD”
The live show was recorded for Roger’s mother’s 102nd birthday and the DVD is snippets from a few of Roger’s concerts and some conversations with dear friends about Roger’s musical journey.

We didn’t get the editing finished as soon as we wanted, because the troubadour I married always puts performing first."

New ACE CD by THE INNOCENTS - Skip Battin Connection

The Innocents, a harmony trio from Sun Valley, California, scored four quick hits – twice in their own right with ‘Honest I Do’ and ‘Gee Whiz’, and twice with Kathy Young (‘A Thousand Stars’ and ‘Happy Birthday Blues’) – on the mysterious Indigo label of Los Angeles. Following its collapse in 1962, the cool trio went on to record equally strong material for Reprise, Decca and Warner Brothers, all of which is heard on this new compilation CD, together with previously unissued masters from the same period in stunning stereo. None of this – even the tunes originally released on 45s back in the 60s - has ever appeared on CD before. Better still, the cache of unissued Warner Brothers and Reprise material is worth the price of the CD alone. Also included are two versions of the Innocents’ superb rogue 45, ‘Tick Tock’. A couple of the guys later moonlighted as the Sugar Beats on an A&M single, and that’s here too.

When they left Indigo, to get out of contract, they had the lead singer Jim West sing two songs for release. Skip Battin arranged and produced him using the name Bobby James: "5000 Tears" and Memories Linger On". Both songs are included in this new ACE CD "Classic Innocents".

You can get more info and order your copy here:

This info and more details were sent to us by lead singer Jim West. Many thanks to him.

New Gene Clark Release Coming Soon: Here Tonight: The White Light Demos

Here Tonight: The White Light Demos

Available March 26, 2013

Never before heard solo demos from the 1970-1971 White Light era!

Here Tonight: The White Light Demos

The Byrds had been America’s answer to The Beatles and topped the charts with their 1965 debut single, “Mr. Tambourine Man.”

They followed it with a string of folk, and country-influenced songs, many of them from Gene Clark’s pen, including “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better”coverd by Tom Petty on his multi-platinum, classic, Full Moon Fever. Finding the pressure that came with success too much Clark suddenly left the Byrds in 1966 and withdrew from the public eye. His attempt at a solo career later that year was hampered by a reluctance to tour or fly (earning him the title of “the Byrd who wouldn’t fly”). Teaming up with banjo demon Doug Dillard in 1968, the Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark bluegrass albums around Gene’s well-crafted songs. By early 1970, he left the band, left L.A. for the open spaces of Little River, Calif., near Mendocino, accompanied by his girlfriend and soon to be wife, Carlie McCummings.
Away from the pressure of the music business and inspired by the pastoral beauty of the area, Clark began to write songs that took on a reflective, introspective direction. His songs became more folky and stripped down as Clark swore he’d never again play electric guitar. “There was no deadline,” says McCummings. “He wasn’t under any pressure. And as a result, the songs just flowed out of him. The lyrics were so pure. They don’t come out of any manufactured experience.”
Here Tonight: The White Light Demos, offers a glimpse into the songwriting craft of Clark at the inception of the compositions that would become his first ’70s solo album, White Light, for A&M Records, released in August of 1971.
Of the tracks, six (“White Light,” “For A Spanish Guitar,” “Where My Love Lies Asleep,” “The Virgin” “Because Of You,” and “With Tomorrow”) appeared in final form on White Light. Two (“Opening Day” and “Winter”) appeared in final form as bonus tracks on the 2002 A&M/Universal reissue of the album. One track (”Here Tonight”) is an alternate version of a song that appeared on the Flying Burrito Brothers compilation Close Up The Honky Tonks. And three songs (“For No One,” “Please Mr. Freud” and “Jimmy Christ”) have never been issued previously in any form.

CD Track List:

1. WHITE LIGHT
2. HERE TONIGHT
3. FOR NO ONE
4. FOR A SPANISH GUITAR
5. PLEASE MR. FREUD
6. JIMMY CHRIST
7. WHERE MY LOVE LIES ASLEEP
8. THE VIRGIN
9. OPENING DAY
10. WINTER IN
11. BECAUSE OF YOU
12. WITH TOMORROW
