R.I.P. Dennis Dragon - one of the last touring Byrds drummers
From our contributor David E.:
R.I.P. Dennis
Dragon, latter-day Byrds road drummer and younger brother of Tennille's
"Captain" Daryl Dragon.
I saw Dennis play with the Byrds in Charleston, SC in
either '72 or '73 - I forget the year.
And yes, Dennis really looked like this -
even on the Byrds tour.
He was also in the touring Beach Boys band around this
time.
Terrific drummer, too!
Later led the tongue-in-cheek but quite fun "Surf
Punks".
Many thanks to David.

New book about Roger McGuinn and The Byrds
Roger McGuinn's ex-wife Dolores DeLeon (aka Ianthe McGuinn aka Ianthe Tickner aka Dolores Tickner), has just published a book titled
"In The Winds - My Life With Roger McGuinn And The Byrds"
It is generally considered very interesting by people who read it, as it sheds a different light on The Byrds and its leader's cahotic existence.

Gene Clark Sings For You...or does he?
Our regular visitor (and long time pen- and cyber friend) Mike M. from England has just spotted on an upcoming release list that on October 13th Omnivore Records
are releasing an album titled 'Gene Clark Sings For You' - the elusive
recordings hopefully...but seeing is believing.
Update 2017/07/28:
Our visitor J.P.M. asked Omnivore about it. Here's their reply:
"We do not have anything scheduled, so I’m not sure how (or where) that information would have originated from. May I ask where you heard about it?"
Update 2017/08/02:
However, a person very well known in Byrds cirles says...
"The GCSFY is coming out I believe before the end of the year. I believe there may also be bonus tracks."

tapes, posters, books, magazines, etc…).
As far as records and CDs are
concerned, we have a near-complete collection of every Byrds album release

him). We also have many 7’’ singles and E.P.s. Most of what we have can be
viewed on Byrds Flyght’s pages.
So now is the time to get this rare

We will answer every e-mail, but of
course we often have one copy only of each item. So don’t be disappointed if
the answer is negative. If so, it’s either because the item has already been

New CHRIS HILLMAN CD featuring Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Tom Petty, Herb Pedersen, Jaydee Maness and more
Bidin’ My Time, the first new solo album in more than
a decade by CHRIS HILLMAN, a
founding member of The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas and the Desert
Rose Band, will be released on Sept. 22 via Rounder Records. Tom Petty produced
the album at his studio in Southern California, and Hillman’s longtime
collaborator and co-founder of the Desert Rose Band, Herb Pedersen, served as
executive producer.
Featured performers and guests on the recording include Byrds
co-founders David Crosby and Roger McGuinn; Desert Rose Band alumni Pedersen,
John Jorgenson and Jay Dee Maness; Petty and fellow Heartbreakers Mike Campbell,
Steve Ferrone, and Benmont Tench. The album kicks off with a new recording of Pete Seeger’s and Welsh poet Idris Davies’ “The Bells of Rhymney,” which the Byrds recorded for their debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man. Crosby and Pedersen contribute harmonies to the tune. “I decided to cut it again because I wanted to sing with David and Herb, two great tenors,” Hillman said in a press release. “David just loves Herb’s singing, and at 75 years old, David is still a powerful singer, one of the best I’ve ever worked with or been around.”
Another Byrds nod, “Here She Comes Again,” was co-written by Hillman and McGuinn, and until now, had only been recorded on a live album in Australia. Hillman plays bass on the track—the instrument he originally played with the Byrds but hadn’t picked up in more than 30 years. “She Don’t Care About Time,” the original B-side to “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” was written by Byrds co-founder Gene Clark, who died in 1991.
Hillman also reworks “Old John Robertson,” first featured on
The Notorious Byrd Brothers in 1968, as “New Old John Robertson.” The
album also includes interpretations of the Everly Brothers’ “Walk Right Back,”
Petty’s “Wildflowers” and “When I Get a Little Money,” written by family friend
Nathan Barrow. See the full track listing below.

John York,
formerly of The Byrds, is one of the key players in California country-rock in
the L.A. area. He is also one of five surviving members of The Byrds. He
recorded three albums with the band as bass player and vocalist in
1968: Dr Byrd and Mr Hyde, The Ballad of Easy Rider and Live
at the Fillmore.
For this very special event John will be focusing on songs
from these three Byrds albums and bring back the signature Byrds sound as well
as give the songs his own twist, which is unique, dynamic and entertaining. As
a member of one of rock's most historic and loved bands, come see John York 'go
back' to the music that helped form his youth as one of L.A.'s legendary
country-rock artists.
Matt Cartsonis was called 'Sin City's Sideman' by the
Americana-roots country e-zine, Turnstyled Junkpiled. He has played on the same
stage and recorded in the same studios with Warren Zevon, Pete Seeger, Jennifer
Warnes, David Bromberg, Steve Martin and Glen Campbell. His most recent
collaboration with John McCuen has landed him twice on the legendary Grand Ole
Opry broadcast in Nashville. McCuen's hit album, Made in Brooklyn, which
features Matt on guitar, mandolin and vocals, is a Grammy bound masterpiece

David Crosby on The Beatles' "Lovely Rita"?
From ROLLING STONE 28.05.2017
After recording 'Lovely Rita' instrumental backing track, the
Beatles reconvened the following day to tackle the vocals. As they worked, a
pair of pop stars dropped by to join them: Tony Hicks of the Hollies and
David Crosby of the Byrds. The Beatles had grown particularly
close to Crosby during an extended stay in Los Angeles as part of their 1965
U.S. tour, even dropping acid with him and fellow Byrd Jim McGuinn. The groups
would continue to a share a great affinity for one another – particularly George
Harrison and McGuinn, who emboldened one another to incorporate Indian modes
into Western pop with their jangling Rickenbacker 12-strings.
All of the Beatles valued Crosby's opinion, so when he stopped
by Abbey Road they were eager to play him some of their latest work. "I was, as
near as I know, the first human being besides them and George Martin and the
engineers to hear 'A Day in the Life,'" Crosby recalled in an interview
with Filter. "I was high as a kite – so high I was
hunting geese with a rake. They sat me down; they had huge speakers, like
coffins with wheels, that they rolled up on either side of the stool. By the
time it got to the end of that piano chord, man, my brains were on the
floor."
Also on hand that night was Leslie Bryce, the staff
photographer from The Beatles Book Monthly magazine, who took several photos of Lennon, McCartney,
Harrison and Crosby gathered around a microphone. The accompanying article
insinuates that Crosby added backup vocals on "Lovely Rita," but his
contribution, if it ever existed (Crosby never says it did), was not used.
However, at some point Paul said, 'We need backup vocals on this. This is what I
want you to sing.' So David Crosby went in there and sang backup vocals on
'Lovely Rita.'" .
The Beatles would revisit "Lovely Rita" on March 7th, when
they tackled a series of unconventional overdubs. In his 2006 memoir, Geoff
Emerick recalls the band "standing around a single microphone humming through a
comb and paper, each priceless Beatle comb carefully wrapped with a single layer
of the standard issue extra-scratchy EMI toilet paper that we were all
constantly complaining about." To achieve a kazoo effect, Mal Evans had been
dispatched to the studio bathrooms to collect several rolls

New Chris Hillman Album In The Make
Hillman, now 73, learned from and remembers the strengths of
every band he has played in, and their members are still friends.
David Crosby sings on his upcoming album, and Roger McGuinn has lent a guitar riff for an unrecorded Byrds melody, "Here She Comes Again," on the disc that will come out in September.
Herb Pedersen offered the record project to Hillman, and he, Pedersen and Jorgenson worked with an impressive co-producer: rock elder statesman Tom Petty.
"He's a wonderful man, one of the sweetest guys in the business," Hillman declared. "I’ve never come across a more humble man, considering the position he's in and what a career he had."
His text proof is The Heartbreakers, Petty's band, who have stayed with him for more than 35 years, Hillman added. He had the supreme luxury of incorporating some Heartbreakers backup into his new album.
"We had a such a good time. And unbeknownst to me at the time, it became sort of a conceptual project covering my musical styles."
